The Force Awakens and Last Jedi Teasers Compared

Disney and Lucasfilm have successfully brought the Star Wars franchise back into pop culture prominence, and now with their third project in as many years the studios seems to have quite the handle on how to construct a great trailer. You can definitely see the similarities in the teasers from Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, especially when they are put one after the other.
That's what YouTube user James Van Fleet has done, and he's even done one better by mapping out the different formula points seen in each one. Some things, like the Lucasfilm Logo, aren't that surprising, but it's the overall beats that stick out the most. Hitting a landscape shot with Rey, quickly followed by narration from Luke Skywalker, with callbacks to the original trilogy in between are effectively used in both trailers. The use of a completely black screen is also seen in both, with as he calls it "final disembodied dialogue" following quickly thereafter. A few image flurries, a big space battle, and the voice of an original cast member round out both trailers, again showing how well the formula works when used correctly.
Star Wars knows how to utilize its rich history, and it shows. Granted, sometimes it relies upon it a bit too much, but that's an article for another time. You can view the full comparison in the video above.
