Star Wars fans are an easily excitable bunch who regularly devour any interesting image or character that debuts in a teaser, ranging from Darth Maul back in 1999’s Phantom Menace to Captain Phasma in The Force Awakens. The latest character to be wholly embraced by fans are porgs, a bird-like creature that debuted in behind-the-scenes footage of The Last Jedi. Writer/director Rian Johnson took to Twitter to shed more information on the creatures.

They are sea birds. Their coloring varies. Males are slightly larger than females. They can fly short distances. They’re inquisitive.

As we learned with Maul and Phasma, commanding screen presence in a trailer isn’t equatable to presence in a film, with each character only having a handful of lines in their respective movies.
Fans witnessed the massive porg presence on Force Friday II, which featured the release of the cuddly creature in a variety of forms. Considering they are birds, we shouldn’t assume the creatures will be as integral to the story as Ewoks were to Return of the Jedi, but with only one teaser released, their importance is anyone’s guess.
Another interesting point about porgs is that, in one shot we’ve glimpsed of Chewbacca, he appears to have feathers around his lips, which could point at the creatures being quite tasty.
Whether you’re impressed by Johnson’s knowledge about the creatures or not, it’s important to note he shared these details with a fan who explicitly said they were going through a depressive episode, with Johnson demonstrating he listens to fans and will happily help those in need, when possible.
Hopefully we learn more about these creatures when Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens on December 15.
