Fans are starting to worry about Maggie Rhee on The Walking Dead after showrunner Scott Gimple’s ominous Season Eight tease.

During a Season Eight preview special which aired on AMC on Sunday night, Gimple revealed Maggie’s baby would not be born in the upcoming 16-episode run. “Maggie’s baby will not be born in Season Eight,” Gimple said. “But anything’s possible.”

At first, many fans took this as meaning Maggie’s baby would be born after Season Eight, possibly during the expected time jump between Season Eight and Season Nine, or even further down the line. However, The Walking Dead‘s reputation for killing characters has some fans panicking over Maggie’s fate and whether the baby will ever be born at all…

The Dark Reactions

The immediate reaction for some fans was confusion. Twitter user LogicSpielย can’t quite make sense of it all and simply wonders, “uh, what?”

Then, there is the crowd which has a dark conclusion. Peter Palmasanoย takes Gimple’sย words from the preview special into account and asks, “What if the baby never gets a chance to be born?” You know, like if its mother won’t survive the upcoming war.

“Bet Maggie dies next season,” said Jesse Grubb, just one day after Gimple’sย word came out.

“I hate to say it but Maggie is gonnaย die,” Junior Valentine said. “Don’t want her to but it’s gonnaย happen.” It’s becoming a dark trend for fans of Glenn’s widowed wife.

Twitter user Shiviย tosses Maggie into a crowd of characters they refuse to see die, which also includes Daryl, Carl, Rick, Morgan and Tara.ย

Twitter userย Ernordethย Puer-Iraeย has a heartbreaking theory of their own. “Season 8 Maggie’s baby won’t be born,” they wrote. “She’s going to have a miscarriage just to make us have the feels.”

Then, there is Val, and the many like her. “We all know what Scott Gimple means by Maggie’s baby will not be born in Season 8,” Val wrote. “It means, this baby will never be born.” Appropriately, a gifย of the old Taylor Swift, who also happens to be dead, accompanies the tweet.ย

The Comics

Spoilers for The Walking Dead comics and possibly TV series follow!

Should AMC’s The Walking Dead continue to accurately follow its comic book source material, Maggie’s baby will be born safe and sound.ย The fact that the little one won’t arrive in Season Eight, however, is an indication of the timeline for the upcoming episodes.ย

Immediately following the “All Out War” story arc in The Walking Dead comics, the series features a major time jump. In that time, which is commonly estimated to span two years, Maggie’s baby is born. This prompts other speculation that the “All Out War” adaptation on television will span the entirety of The Walking Dead‘s eighth season.

Withย Gimpleย teasing the time jump to be an accurate guess for the Old Man Rick moment seen inย The Walkingย Dead‘s Season Eightย trailer, it seems safe to assume the Season Eightย finale will be a conclusion of sorts for the war with Seasonย Nine kicking off after the time jump!
