The Walking Dead has had a way of dropping subtle hints to major storylines all along. Through Season 5, we were teased with “Wolves Not Far” until the Wolves showed up and wreaked havoc on Alexandria in Season 6. A small “+” on the back of a car lead us to Dawn and her hospital staff in Atlanta before the Wolves story. And, going way back, Shane’s insanity left us wondering what he could have done to a young man to make him turn without being bitten, leading to our discovery of the airborne virus.
The Walking Dead is at it again with subtle clues in Season 7.
During Daryl Dixon’s time at Negan‘s Sanctuary, we were introduced to a whole slew of new faces. Among them was Dr. Emmett Carson. The doctor treated Daryl’s wounds and insisted that Negan will take care of him if he should behave but had a touch of “I don’t want to be here” in his voice.
Emmett Carson doesn’t want to be at the Sanctuary. He wants to be at the Hilltop with his brother!
A lot of fans may have missed the connection but the doctor who cared for Maggie during her pregancy complications is named Harlan Carson. Harlan is Emmett’s brother.

In the comics, the Sanctuary’s doctor wants out. He wants to be reunited with his brother at the Hilltop. Eager to get there, the doctor betrays Negan when he is out of the Sanctuary and frees Eugene, fleeing with burnt-face Mark and his girlfriend Amber. It’s Eugene who has to step up along the way to ensure their safety but Dr. Carson who enables them to be escape in the first place.
Dr. Carson’s betrayal not only means Eugene’s escape but it also means the Alexandrian won’t have to produce bullets for the Saviors during a time of war and a considerable bit of intel for Rick Grimes and the good guys. That said, he is not the only member of the Saviors who is lined up to betray the big bad.
Whether or not the story plays out the same way on the AMC series is to be seen but Season 7 of The Walking Dead has been following Robert Kirkman‘s source material more closely than any season before it. “There are some great moments from the comic books that we’re going to get a chance to experience,” executive producer Greg Nicotero told ComicBook.com ahead of Season 7. “To me it feels like we may be a little closer in nature to certain beats in the graphic novel than we have in the past, but that could just be my interpretation of it.”

The Walking Dead returns for the rest of its seventh season on February 12 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC. Fear the Walking Dead‘s third season does not yet have a premiere date but with The Walking Dead finale set for April 2, expectations for Fear‘s return are set for April 9.
