A few weeks ago, the synopsis for the back half of The Walking Dead's seventh season was released. In it, the new focus "to defeat Negan" was revealed but a particular sentence stood out for fans worried about their beloved Alexandrians and Hilltoppers. "We'll see treachery from people we trust," the synopsis said.
"On one level, it’s very obvious that we’re getting ready for war, and everyone who knows the comic books knows that we’re about to go into a couple of years of war," James said. "I don’t know how long that’s going to pan out in the television series, but it goes on for a while in the comics. So we’re about to go to war, and the second block [of eight episodes] is about meeting the protagonists and certain events that are going to decide what sides people take. And it’s not going to be a clear division of labour, let me say."
Here's where things get worrysome...
"There are some people who go to the dark side who are going to take you by surprise, and there are some people who are going to come over to the light – and that’s all a matter of perspective," James said.
Comic book fans are immediately racking their brains to figure out who could betray Rick and the group in favor of Negan. The only character who could do such a thing is Gregory, who warns Negan and the Saviors when Rick plans to march on the Sanctuary. However, his betrayal would not exactly take anyone by surprise. With character like Morgan, Carol, and Daryl filling roles which didn't exist at this point in the comics, one has to wonder if it could be one of them.
"As with this show, nothing’s going to move in a straight line. But one of the things that’s inevitable is that we’re heading to war."
