AMC aired the second episode of The Walking Dead‘s seventh season on Sunday night. Following the brutal Season 7 premiere which aired a week prior, the new hour which took viewers to the Kingdom for the first time was a welcome change of pace for the typically dark series.

In The Well, not only did Melissa McBride and Lennie James’ Carol and Morgan make their returns after being absent from the premiere but Khary Payton made his series debut as King Ezekiel, leader of the Kingdom.
After meeting the extravagant, possibly out of his mind leader, Carol was ready to jet out of the community. She was understandably skeptical of the leader’s methods and his community as a whole. However, before the new hour would come to a close, the King pulled back the curtain and revealed his true colors. He and Carol had an honest conversation – one he hoped would convince her to stay.
In the “Talked About Scene” from The Well, Ezekiel reveals his backstory. Staiying true to the comics, he was a zookeeper who saved his tiger Shiva’s life after she fell into a moat. Ever since the day he saved her, the jungle cat has been a loyal protector of the extravagant leader.
Typically, when AMC releases a “Talked About Scene” online after each new episode, there is some death and destruction involved. The Well did not feature the traditional violence fans of the show have come to expect. Instead, it featured puns, smiles, and cobbler.
Prior to The Walking Dead, Ezekiel actor Payton was best known for his voice work on Teen Titans. Now that he has put on the white dreads, he’ll be wrestling an all new fanbase into submission.
