Though it’s hardly two years old, The Walking Dead‘s season five still feels a bit nostalgic. It’s arguably the most explosive season to date and the massive amounts of action poured into the season’s first half will be tough to top.

Think about how season five started. Rick, Glenn, Daryl and Bob found themselves over a trough in Terminus with a couple of strangers. The group of cannibals cracked Sam, a young man Rick had once encountered elsewhere, over the head with a baseball bat and slit his throat. Just as Glenn’s turn came, the menacing Gareth barged in and delayed it just long enough for Carol to cause a massive explosion, launching her insane rescue mission.
The group would escape and for the next few episodes be hunted by Gareth and his group. However, after claiming Bob as victim and eating his “tainted meat,” they would head to the church where Rick and the group would be waiting to slaughter them.
Soon after the encounter with the Hunters, Rick’s group would wander the woods just like old times. Beth and Daryl found themselves isolated from the group and the youngest remaining member of the Greene family was eventually kidnapped and forced to live in an Atlanta hospital. Much of the season circled around getting her back. Unfortunately for her, the leader of the oddball group, Dawn, shot her during the exchange.
Trapped with Beth was Noah, who would be set free, but wouldn’t live for much longer. The character made it to Alexandria with the rest of the group after being discovered by Aaron but would get brutally devoured in a revolving door because of Nicholas’ cowardice. Tyreese would also meet his demise, before Alexandria, though. As the group investigated Noah’s old neighborhood, Tyreese was bitten by a walker and on his way out, hallucinated visions of Beth, Bob, Lizzie, Mika, and the Governor.
Once reaching Alexandria, the group was able to clean up and play house a bit but not for too long. Rick took on the role of Sheriff in town but found himself lusting over another man’s wife, Jessie Anderson. Jessie was being abused by her husband, so Rick aggressively stepped in and ultimately killed Pete Anderson after he lost it and killed Alexandria leader Deanna’s husband, Reg.
Other deaths included Aiden, Dawn, Gorman, and Buttons the horse.
The Walking Dead will return for its seventh season in October but in the mean time, take a trip down memory lane with the season five photos in the gallery below.
