Though Troy’s death in the 3 finale of Fear the Walking Dead was controversial among fans, Madison actress Kim Dickens stands by her character’s decision.

In Troy’s final moments, he was planting C4 around the dam with Madison, only for Nick to enter and reveal Troy’s wrongdoings. Finally, Madison had had enough of Troy’s betrayals and brought a hammer down on his head, twice, wiping the last remaining member of the Otto family from the face of the earth.

“I hated to see Daniel Sharman go because I had such a wonderful time with him and I think he’s an incredible actor,” Dickens said. “He created this really brilliant, charming, maniacal character who you did want to hang around so that we could love to hate him. I think it was such a beautiful scene because you didn’t know. Maybe, right before, we were even gonna kiss? It was so weird and then all the sudden out of nowhere you see it start to hit Madison. The levels of his betrayal. It can’t go further.”

Still, Dickens credits the writing and performances for fans who were rooting for the kiss between Madison and Troy. “You can feel okay about yourself because his a charming character,” Dickens said.

Looking back at Season 3 of Fear the Walking Dead, Dickens notes she is “exceptionally proud” of how the show found its stride and resulted in “an incredible season” for her. Going forward, the major changes coming to the show remain a mystery for Dickens for the time being. “Everything’s a mystery to me,” Dickens said. “We have no idea what’s gonna happen. Change always happens. Change is a little hard for us. It’s a constant so we just gotta keep showing up for it.”
