7 Years Later, the MCU Continues to Ignore One of Its Most Important Lines

The Marvel Cinematic Universe rarely does anything by accident. When it says something, it means that thing, and more likely than not, it will come back around in some way, shape, or form. Early in Avengers: Infinity War, Gamora mentions that, with all of the Infinity Stones, her father, Thanos, could snap his fingers and wipe half of life in the universe. At the time, it seems like she’s just explaining how easy the feat would be for the Mad Titan, but it turns out he’s always had the snap in mind. There’s just so much weight behind Infinity War‘s dialogue because everything is at stake.

Revisiting the third Avengers film isn’t all that important these days, as the MCU is looking to move on from the past and embrace the Multiverse Saga. However, there are still ripple effects from Infinity War that make an impact on both movies and TV shows. In fact, one line from the movie is becoming a topic of conversation again in 2025 because the MCU seems to be ignoring it once again.

Thor Claims That Not Just Anyone Can Wield Stormbreaker in the MCU

Stormbreaker in the ground in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Thor rarely goes anywhere without a weapon. He starts by wielding Mjolnir, using it to battle against his own brother and Ultron. Hela puts her old hammer out of commission in Thor: Ragnarok, though, forcing her brother to learn what it means to be the God of Thunder. Unfortunately, firing a few lightning bolts doesn’t solve Thor’s problems when Thanos shows up looking for the Space Stone. Half of the Asgardians that Thor saved from his former home die at the hands of the Mad Titan, motivating him to become stronger. The only place Thor can think to go for a power-up is Nidavellir, where the Dwarves craft god-killing weapons.

The Guardians of the Galaxy, who save Thor, discuss his plan with him, with Rocket agreeing to accompany the Asgardian because he’s heard terrifying things about Nidavellir. However, Star-Lord pumps the brakes because he thinks that everyone should have a weapon strong enough to kill Thanos. Thor explains that wielding a weapon of the Dwarves’ creation will be too much for someone weaker than him, threatening to turn their minds to mush. They all take his word for it because he’s the expert in the room, but it turns out that Thor is full of it because, once he gets his hands on Stormbreaker, he isn’t afraid to share the weapon. It actually won’t be long before the axe ends up in the hands of another MCU hero, one that, while powerful, doesn’t make the Guardians look like schmucks.

Spider-Man Will Get to Swing Stormbreaker Around in Marvel Zombies

Spider-Man in Marvel Zombies.

The first hero to get a crack at using Stormbreaker after Thor is Captain America, who accidentally grabs it during the Battle of Earth in Avengers: Endgame. Having the Super Soldier Serum coursing through his veins makes Steve Rogers far stronger than a regular man, but he’s not at the level of an Asgardian. Peter Parker is in the same boat, as the radioactive spider bite makes him incredibly strong but not tough enough to go toe-to-toe with Thanos. Well, that doesn’t seem to matter because, in the trailer for the upcoming animated series Marvel Zombies, Spider-Man gets his hands on Stormbreaker and throws it at an undead version of the Mad Titan. While it doesn’t do much damage, Peter should count himself lucky that he keeps all his faculties.

It’s easy to understand why the MCU continues to ignore Thor’s exposition dump. In Infinity War, it’s the only thing keeping every hero in the movie from rushing Thanos with a weapon strong enough to withstand the power of the Infinity Gauntlet. But with the villain out of the picture, there’s no reason to keep playing by the rules, especially in the animated format, where the stakes aren’t as high. It’s a shame that a franchise that once had its audience hanging on every word is willing to dismiss one of its best projects in favor of showcasing some cool visuals.

Marvel Zombies starts streaming on Disney+ on September 24.
