Marvel Just Recreated One of the MCU’s Most Iconic Moments (& It Went Terribly)

The Marvel Cinematic Universe loves a good moment. There are countless scenes in the franchise where the score kicks in, and a pregnant pause ensues, allowing the audience to cheer their hearts out while the heroes pose in a cool way. Avengers: Endgame, of course, features the most notable example of this situation, when Captain America prepares to face Thanos’ army alone. Just when all hope seems lost, Sam Wilson starts communicating with his old friend and announces the arrival of all of Earth’s heroes. As more and more portals open, the hype grows bigger, and Cap perfectly brings it to a fever pitch by delivering his iconic line, “Avengers… Assemble.”

As much as Endgame wants to hold the top spot, though, it has some serious competition from its predecessor, Avengers: Infinity War. The third Avengers film is the first time that the entire MCU comes together, and it’s hard to top that. The MCU is proving as much because it just recreated an iconic moment from Infinity War, only for things not to work out nearly as well the second time around.

Thor Gets a Second Chance to Fight Thanos

The opening of Infinity War isn’t for the faint of heart. Thanos boards the ship that’s fleeing Asgard and lays waste to half of its occupants in front of their king. Thor tries to fight back, but he’s not at full power after fighting Hela, losing to the Mad Titan before the movie even starts. While being held in chains, the God of Thunder can only watch as his friend, Heimdall, and his brother, Loki, die. Rage starts to fill Thor’s heart, and he promises to get his revenge. It takes him a little while, but reaching Nidavellir and helping forge Stormbreaker is the push that he needs to seek out his rematch. Using his new axe, Thor calls the Bifrost to travel to Wakanda with Rocket and Groot and turns the tide of the battle.

Of course, Thor takes his eye off the ball after finding the Mad Titan and fails to stop him from snapping. Letting half of the galaxy die weighs heavily on the hero, and his variant in Marvel Zombies doesn’t want to make the same mistake. In the animated series, Thor arrives in Wakanda the same way he does in Infinity War, ready to let his anger out. Unfortunately, the situation he finds himself in is very different from the one that his Earth-616 doppleganger deals with.

Marvel Zombies‘ Thor Has It Even Worse Than the Original

Thor in Marvel Zombies.

Marvel Zombies doesn’t specify whether Thor is aware of the virus outbreak on Earth, but it doesn’t seem likely that he is. Thanos, who is learning to wield the Infinity Stones in his undead form, sends a blast of energy the heroes’ way and kills Rocket and Groot instantly. As the skull of the cutest Guardian of the Galaxy hits the ground, so does Thor, who can’t withstand the attack. The only silver lining is that Black Panther takes out Thanos and saves the world from an even worse fate. Thor, like his variant, doesn’t take the loss well and becomes a shell of himself in New Asgard. Not even Valkyrie can rely on him for anything.

Thor eventually sees an opportunity to make things right and picks a fight with Scarlet Witch, who is trying to raise an undead army to attack the Infinity Hulk. However, while he holds off the villain long enough for his allies to escape into space and send the message to the Nova Corps, he loses once again and joins her ranks. The God of Thunder only lasts a little bit longer, losing his life in a fight against Bruce Banner’s alter ego. That’s not a road that the Sacred Timeline’s Thor will ever go down, especially now that he has a child of his own. He has everything to live for, which means no more pity parties or letting zombies take over the planet.
