It’s rare for a TV show to spell out its ending as early as The Boys does. In the first couple of episodes of the Prime Video series, Billy Butcher recruits Hughie Campbell and reveals his desire to eliminate all the Supes, being disgusted by their lack of accountability. He doesn’t hate every Supe equally, though. No, he holds Homelander in a special place in his heart because of the leader of The Seven’s connection to the disappearance of his wife, Becca. Nearly every episode ofย The Boysย is about the lengths Billy will go to in order to kill Homelander, and Season 4’s finale sees Karl Urban’s character take the gloves off permanently by revealing his disturbing powers.

Before Homelander and Billy finally end their feud,ย The Boysย franchise is making a pitstop at Godolkin University in Gen V Season 2. The start of the spinoff’s sophomore outing makes it appear like it’s business as usual, with Starlight reaching out to Marie Moreau to get more information about Vought’s mysterious Project Odessa. However, it’s starting to become clear that Gen V‘s story is bigger than Homelander, revealing that he’s not the one holding all the cards.
Cipher Finally Tells Marie Moreau What He Wants in Gen V Season 2

The new dean of God U, Cipher, has been a thorn in the students’ side since his arrival. For starters, he ran the experiments that Marie, Jordan Li, Emma Meyer, and Andre Anderson underwent at the Elmira Adult Rehabilitation Center. His goal was to push everyone’s powers, and the process ended up killing Andre, who tried to escape the prison by tearing a massive door off the hinges. Even after everyone returns to school, Cipher continues to cause problems by forcing his students to fight, mostly in an effort to gauge Marie’s capabilities. He truly believes that she can be the most powerful Supe of all time, but he won’t explain why until she returns to Elmira in an effort to save Cate Dunlap in Gen V Season 2, Episode 5.
With Marie back in a cell, Cipher reveals that he doesn’t view Marie as a weapon. What is so enticing about her is that she has the potential to heal the world with her blood-bending abilities. While Marie doesn’t understand what he means at the time, she starts to understand when she finds her sister dead in a cell in the prison. Rather than breaking down, she quickly begins using her abilities, which allow her to close the girl’s wound and bring her back from the brink of death. Marie’s friends feel a great deal of pain while she saves her sister, but that’s probably not going to deter her, as she now realizes that Cipher isn’t as crazy as he seems.
Cipher Has His Eye on More Than Just Power

While almost everyone associated with Vought in The Boys franchise just wants to keep their seat at the table, Cipher is after more. Sister Sage, who knows what he’s up to, visits him and encourages him to speed up his work, as they only have a limited amount of time to complete it. She explains that he shouldn’t worry about Homelander and how he’ll feel about Marie surpassing him, because the mission is that important. It’s shocking to hear anyone scoff at the world’s strongest Supe, but it’s starting to feel like he’s small potatoes compared to what Cipher and Sister Sage are cooking up.
Homelander isn’t going to make it out of The Boys Season 5; he has far too many enemies who would give anything to see him gone. However, the end of Homelander doesn’t mean the end of Vought, nor does it mean the end of Supe supremacy. What Cipher appears to be doing is ensuring that, even if humans bring down the head of the dragon, another one grows in its place that’s even more dangerous. With Marie in his corner, Supes don’t have to fear death, and neither do the humans that agree to help Vought complete its goals.
