Not only did Westworld enjoy one of the most popular first seasons in HBO history, but it was easily one of the most talked-about topics on the Internet throughout its ten week run. With so many twists, theories, and cliffhangers, the show was buzzed about by millions of fans all over the world.

The first season finale definitely fulfilled the expectations of fans, but it also left everyone wanting more. With the murder of Ford, the introduction of Samurai World, and the reveal regarding Arnold’s killer, every moment gave viewers more than enough to talk about.
There was one scene however, that had everybody debating long after the episode. If you’re mind immediately heads to Maeve’s actions on the train, you’re not alone.
Maeve seemed to be up to a grand scheme throughout the entire first season of Westworld, and it ultimately ended with her on a train, heading out into the real world. Maeve didn’t feel the joy she expected though, as it was revealed that her escape was part of Ford’s plan all along. She was, in fact, just following orders.
However, just before the train departed, Maeve got off, and headed back inside. Many viewers speculated that this act was one of true defiance, and it wasn’t part of her programming.
Well, it turns out all those viewers were right.
During the Westworld panel at Paleyfest, the creators and cast chatted about the ending of season one. Showrunner Jonathan Nolan admitted, finally, that fans were correct in their ideas regarding Maeve’s decisions.
“The way that we designed it and the way we shot it… that is really the first decision she’s ever made. For me, it’s a very emotional moment in the episode because you’re seeing the first freewill.”

Not only was that Maeve’s first true decision, but that quote states that it’s the first truly original thought that fans have seen play out on-screen. Many fans think about Dolores’ actions in the finale, and wonders if they were of her freewill. This time, Nolan teases the fans.
“Isn’t it more fun to just guess?”
Westworld will return for a second season, but there isn’t a set date for new episodes. Fans will have to wait until sometime in 2018, but that’s the only timeline that’s been revealed so far. Nolan, along with wife and co-showrunner Lisa Joy, are currently writing season two.
