Spider-Man Director Shares His Thoughts On Tom Holland

After meeting with Marvel executives several times, Jon Watts was offered the opportunity to direct the next solo Spider-Man being co-produced with Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. When that happened, Watts says, "It was an immediate yes." For a young director with only two indie-flicks under his belt Spider-Man is a huge step up, but Watts won't let the bigger-budget distract him.

"You have to think about what story you want to tell, and what's the best way to tell it," Watts told the Toronto Sun while promoting Cop Car. "The idea that there are no real limitations is exciting, but I think you have to apply your own limitations to make sure you're telling the right kind of story."

His leading man is Tom Holland (The Impossible), a 19-year-old actor that embodies everything a director could look for in a Peter Parker/Spider-Man. "It feels like he's the right age, he has the right level of enthusiasm and a little bit of confidence, but a lot of insecurity mixed into that," Watts said. "On top of nailing the character, he can also do a standing backflip."

Tom Holland's Spider-Man/Peter Parker will make a cameo in Captain America: Civil War, which will arrive on May 6, 2016. He'll then star in the Jon Watts-directed solo Spider-Man movie to be released on July 28, 2017.
