Netflix's 'Godzilla' Announces Sequel Featuring Mecha Godzilla

On Friday, Netflix will make good on its promise to give the world its first taste of anime Godzilla. The streaming site will release Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters on November 17, but that will not be the end of the kaiju. Toho Animation announced a sequel is already in the works, and it will bring Mecha Godzilla to the forefront.

Yes, Mecha Godzilla. The anime sequel is already looking to be the perfect blend of all things beastly and robotic.

So far, there is very little known about the sequel, but it does have a name and poster. The second movie will be titled Godzilla: Kessen Kidou Zoushoku Toshi. The film's poster, which can be seen below, gives fans a look at what its kaiju will look like. The dark picture shows a group of humans standing before a massive mecha structure. When you look closely, you can tell the mecha is actually Godzilla itself, and fans are loving how the futuristic monster looks.

Right now, the Godzilla sequel is expected to debut in May 2018. Japan will release the film in theaters, and Toho has released a list of participating theaters for fans to peruse.

If you are not familiar with Mecha Godzilla, then you should know the character isn't a new one. The futuristic beast dates back to Godzilla vs Mecha Godzilla a la 1974. The character has since appeared in several other films with its last outing having taken place in 2003.

Godzilla fans will know Mecha Godzilla has one complicated history. The character was made to be a more serious villain for the iconic franchise, and its design was based on popular mecha anime titles like Mobile Suit Gundam. The villain has gone through a few iterations as Mecha Godzilla had been turned into an alien project, a U.N. counter-measure, and more. There is no telling how the anime film will usher in the creature, but fans may get a teaser once Netflix's first Godzilla feature debuts this month.

If you are not familiar with the original Godzilla film, then you should know an all-star team is working on the film. Kobun Shizuno and Hiroyuki Seshita are co-directing the project with Polygon Pictures. Gen Urobuchi penned the film's script and tag-teamed its composition alongside Yusuki Kozaki. Godzilla: Planet of Monsters also has a formidable vocal cast that includes Yuuki Kaji, Takahiro Sakurai, Mamoru Miyano, Junichi Suwabe, Kana Hanazawa, and Tomokazu Sugita.
