Entertainment Weekly has an early scoop on some of Marvel Comics’ big Comic-Con news and, while more details will be available tomorrow, they’ve got the first snippet of the first image of something that Marvel is going to talk about at San Diego on their website now…and it’s a big one.
That’s right–according to Entertainment Weekly (usually DC’s favorite place to go with scoops since they’re owned by the same parent company), Jean Grey will be returning soon, and the image at right–drawn by Joe Quesada himself, no less–is evidence of the fact.
“We can only confirm that her presence in the Marvel Universe will not be imaginary. This will not be part of the Ultimate line-up. She will not be a zombie hologram, like Shard on X-Factor,” the magazine teased before telling fans to come back for more later in the week.
More likely than not, it will be related to the end of Avengers vs. X-Men, although it’s interesting to note that she’s back in her Marvel Girl outfit rather than a Phoenix costume as many have predicted. That said, it’s entirely possible that this is the cover to one of the new #1 issues rumored to be planned for the Marvel Now! iniative.
Whatever it is that’s behind her is just about as inscrutable as how she might be coming back or what she’s doing on that costume. The green, sinewy part certainly brings The Incredible Hulk to mind, but what’s the metal thing on her right? And if that’s The Hulk, then where’s the rest of him? There’s been persistent rumors from Bleeding Cool of something called The Uncanny Avengers coming out of Avengers vs. X-Men; perhaps that team will be led by a revived Jean Grey.
Of course, Quesada has had some success delving into the past of the Marvel Universe before with projects like Wolverine: Origin, so it’s not entirely implausible that this could be set in the world of X-Men: First Class or something like it. It seems fans will have to wait until Comic-Con (or at least until Entertainment Weekly checks back in tomorrow) for more information.
