Guardians of the Galaxy: More X-Men Than Avengers

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, in an interview with MTV, told the cable network that the forthcoming Marvel Studios adaptation of Guardians of the Galaxy will feature a group that starts out the film already thrown together as a team, comparing it more to X-Men than The Avengers in terms of the way the group is developed. The comments came when he was asked about DC's rumored Justice League movie, currently being written by Gangster Squad scribe Will Beall. Due to Warner Brothers's hesitation to get some of DC's lesser-known characters off the ground as film franchises, the studio doesn't have an equivalent to an Iron Man or Thor film, and it seems likely they'll plunge right into the Justice League without much of a lead-up. Feige suggested that both ways can work as long as you've got your eye on the ball, saying that The Avengers worked the way it did, but that doesn't take away from the success of X-Men, which started with the characters already at the Xavier School together, and that Guardians of the Galaxy will take a similar tack. "There's no rule that say you have to do it one way or the other, though I believe that what was unique about Avengers was not that it was a group of superheroes, but a group of superheroes you knew and loved from other [films] all coming together," Feige said. "It wasn't like X-Men, which is inherently a team-based film, or Guardians of the Galaxy, which we're working on right now and is also a team-based film from the start. It was all of these people from other stories coming in and merging for one story. That's what was cool to me about Super Friends when I was a kid and that's why I wanted to do Avengers the way we did it."
