Super Bowl Sunday is nearly upon us and, of course, with the Super Bowl comes big budget commercials including movie trailers. We already know that we’re getting trailers for Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Transformers: Age of Extinction, but what else might we see? Here are some thoughts:
RoboCop – This seems like a logical choice. We know Sony has purchased some air time and RoboCop opens up pretty soon after the big game, so why not give it a big last minute push? It would probably see a pretty significant return on investment, since viewers can act on what they see just ten days after the Super Bowl.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier – The first trailer for Captain America: The Winter Soldier generated a huge amount of buzz when it was released online prior to being shown with Thor: The Dark World. It would seem like a wise move on Disney and Marvel’s part to keep that buzz going into the film’s April 4th release date. Just showing the shortened version of the trailer they already have would surely generate a whole new buzz when it gets seen by football fans who may have missed it online and in theaters. There’s no confirmation of a trailer showing up, but it seems like smart marketing.
X-Men: Days of Future Past – With the Super Bowl airing on Fox’s network, it seems likely that 20th Century Fox will use the opportunity to show off their next big film, X-Men: Days of Future Past. They won’t have to do too much to sell it to audiences, the film has sufficient star power that showing off the cast list, alone, would probably get people interested. It seems like a low cost-high reward way to generate some buzz for the new X-Men film.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – On the other hand, Fox may choose to give some time to a film that needs it. They must be pretty confident in the film, since they’ve already put the sequel into production and started signing talent, but the film lacks the star-studded ensemble cast that X-Men has, so maybe they’ll put a teaser out during the Super Bowl broadcast and get people talking.
The Expendables 3 – We know that Lionsgate has purchased time and The Expendables 3 seems like the only choice for what they’d be showing off. It’s their big summer action film, it’s exactly the kind of movie you’d expect to see on Super Bowl Sunday, and it’s just oozing star power. This one seems like it was built for a Super Bowl Sunday ad.
