Mark Romanek, who directed the failed pilot for Joe Hill's Locke & Key, is in negotiations to helm Warner Bros.' Overlook Hotel, a prequel to The Shining from Hill's father, author Stephen King.

The film, based on King's original prologue to the novel which was cut from the book prior to publication, was written by former The Walking Dead showrunner Glen Mazzara and is set to be produced by Mythology's Brad Fischer, James Vanderbilt and Laeta Kalogridis.

Variety, who got the story, say the film will tell the origin story of the Overlook Hotel through the eyes of its first owner, a robber baron at the turn of the 20th century who scaled the remote peaks of the Colorado Rockies to build the grandest resort in America, and a place he and his family would also call home.

A film adaptation of The Shining starred Jack Nicholson and was directed by Stanley Kubrick; it's widely accepted as one of the great movies in the history of the genre. It was redone as a 1997 miniseries starring Steven Weber. It was not nearly as acclaimed but was, in some ways, more true to the source material.

In 2013, King published a sequel called Dr. Sleep, which is also in early development at Warner Bros., with John Cusack expressing interest.
