Last month we reported that a fascinating new app is in the works which would allow users to stream PC games straight to their Nintendo Switch. The app is called "Rainway," and at the time we were reporting that the developer believed Nintendo would eventually allow this program onto the Nintendo Switch eShop.
In theory, this app would allow you to stream you PC games to pretty much any device that can connect to a strong internet connection: your phone, a laptop, and yes, your Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo Switch is supports 5GHz wifi, so we imagine that latency and input lag wouldn't be a big issue if the program is properly optimized. So that means that, if all goes according to plan, you'd be able to stream and play games like Grand Theft Auto V or Dark Souls III with the graphics cranked way up and everything running at 60 fps -- straight to your Switch while you lay in bed.
We never thought Nintendo would go for such a thing, but apparently the wheels are still turning, and the Rainway devs are still giving us updates. On May 11, we saw the following tweet:
We received an update from Nintendo today and we hope to have some good news for you soon.— Rainway (@RainwayApp) May 11, 2017
Today, just minutes ago in fact, we got another promising update:
We will be announcing a new beta date and giving you updates on our Switch client soon. Thanks for your patience and support.— Rainway (@RainwayApp) May 19, 2017
Over 75,000 people have signed up for the Rainway beta (this writer included), and you can do the same right here. If these guys manage to pull this off, it's going to be a huge game-changer Switch owners. We'll keep you updated as soon as we learn more. Here's a little more basic info about Rainway:
Leverage the power of your PC
Enjoy Civilization VI from the comfort of your couch with a tablet, play Stardew Valley on the go from your phone or just enjoy your favorite PC games on macOS and Linux all at 60FPS.
No additional hardware required
Any GPU that supports DirectX 11 can take advantage of the Rainway MSG protocol.
Rainway handles configuring your network and securing your connection so the only thing you have to worry about is playing your games.
