Nintendo Wants To Make Anime Starring Star Fox, Yoshi, And Their Other Characters

For years, Nintendo jealously hoarded their properties, not allowing any outside companies access to them. An understandable position considering loaning out their characters resulted in the legendarily awful live-action Super Mario Bros. movie. That said, Nintendo has begun to soften in recent years – they’re collaborating with Universal Them Parks on Super Nintendo World, there’s rumors a CGI Super Mario movie may be in the works, and Shigeru Miyamoto just let slip they may be working on some new anime series.

Nintendo held their annual shareholder Q&A this past Thursday, and one of the questions touched on the Kirby anime Nintendo produced in the mid-2000s. According to Miyamoto, Nintendo has further plans for the Kirby series, and hopes to produce anime starring other characters, as well (thanks to Alex Aniel for translating/transcribing the answer) …

Miyamoto’s original ambition before falling into game design was to become a manga or anime artist, and you can tell he still has a lot of affection for the medium. Nintendo recently teamed up with Production I.G. (Ghost in the Shell, Psycho-Pass) for a Star Fox Zero short – the game may have got mixed reviews, but the anime was pretty damn impressive. Personally, I’d love to see more Nintendo anime with that level of polish. I mean, come on, who doesn’t want a Production I.G. animated Metroid short? Or a Super Smash Bros. series?
