So any players out there who remember the good ol' days of Mortal Kombat in the arcades will totally get a kick out of the Easter Egg we just discovered in Injustice 2. Prepare to get…TOASTY!

In the Easter Egg, posted on YouTube by a user named SinX6, we see an exchange between Sub-Zero and Starfire, from the first Fighter DLC pack that was introduced a few months back for the game. They go on about their outfits for a little bit before they get into fisticuffs, before Starfire eventually wins the match.

However, it's what she says before they get into their next mix-up that's interesting, as she notes, "You look toasty, as they say." Now, if you recall, the Mortal Kombat arcade games introduced a familiar face that would come out and say "TOASTY!" during particular uppercuts. And you can see later in the video, with some classic gameplay footage from Mortal Kombat III, where that's exactly applied.

So for those not familiar with the lore, here's a quick history lesson. The "Toasty!" joke first appeared in Mortal Kombat II back in the 90's as an Easter egg. Sound designer Dan Forden would appear at the bottom of the screen while "Toasty!" is yelled out in a falsetto voice, usually, again, during uppercuts.

Since then, "Toasty!" has become the stuff of legend in Mortal Kombat games, including the option to face off as Smoke in the Portal stage if you hir down and start while Dan appears on the screen, as well as references in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance and Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, amongst many others. There's even a new reference in the 2011 Mortal Kombat release for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, with, once again, Dan yelling it out.

So there you go. An arcade classic's reference made its way into Injustice 2, and it's pretty damn awesome, if we say so ourselves. But the game has many references to other Mortal Kombat and DC Comics products as well, and we'll be keeping an eye out for the best ones to come.

Injustice 2 is available now for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
