The Logan Instagram account has released the latest black and white teaser photo for the upcoming Wolverine movie, confirming a certain group of villains inclusion to challenge Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in his final performance.
The photo shows a man with what looks like technologically enhanced arms aiming a sniper rifle. The caption reads “Reaver,” which seems to confirm the inclusion of the criminal, mutant-hating X-Men villains known as the Reavers in Logan.
The Reavers were originally introduced to the Marvel Universe in the 1980s, during the X-Men’s “Outback era.” The Reavers were cyborg thugs who had taken control of a small town in the outback. The group was comprised primarily of Skullbuster, Pretty Boy, and Bonebreaker.
When the X-Men arrived in the Australia, they drove the Reavers out of town and used the now abandoned settlement as their new base of operations.
Donald Pierce, who will by played by Richard Holbrook in Logan, came to lead the group and added Macon and Reese, two Hellfire Club guards who had been badly wounded by Wolverine in a prior confrontation, to the Reaver’s roster. The group returned to their former home in Australia ready to battle the X-Men but found Wolverine alone. They beat Logan badly, crucified him, and left him to die in the wilderness.
The Reavers have since returned to battle the X-Men on several occasions. Lady Deathstrike, the Wolverine villain who was played by Kelly Hu in X2: X-Men United, also joined the Reavers, and eventually replaced Pierce as their leader.
It is unclear which Reaver is represented in this photo. The entire team is made up of cyborg weapons experts, so it could be any one of them. It is also unclear how many of the Reavers will make up Pierce’s team in Logan, but we’re sure we’ll find out more as Logan’s theatrical release draws closer.
We expect to see more such teaser images released over the course of the week. The Logan Instagram account has been releasing images precisely at 10:23 a.m. ET, and believe there’s a very specific reason for that.
According to reports, Logan takes place in a near future where Wolverine's mutant abilities are not quite what they used to be, and mutant births are down across the globe. Wolverine and the mutant Caliban take care of Professor X in his old age. Meanwhile, a corporation called Transigen is turning mutant children into killed machines. Wolverine meets one of these children, whose hand can be seen in the first poster. The child has two claws like Wolverine's that protrude from her hand and Wolverine vows to protect her.
Logan is directed by James Mangold and stars Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant, Eriq La Salle and Elise Neal.
The title, Logan, is likely an homage to the comic book story "Old Man Logan," on which Logan is said to be loosely based.
Logan opens in theaters on March 3, 2017.
