Avengers: Endgame becoming one of the biggest movies of all time came as a surprise to absolutely no one. In a pretty smooth marketing move to fill seats for Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel Studios re-released its highest-grossing movie, this time with added scenes that give some additional context for the potentially mind-bending moments coming in Doomsday. These scenes include the answer to a fan theory about whether or not Steve Rogers essentially ruined the timeline when he went back to live a life with Peggy Carter, and also confirm that Rhodey himself is actually a Skrull.

Now, thanks to Avengers: Endgame Encore, Endgame officially achieved the highest honor a studio like Marvel could hope for: becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time, surpassing James Cameron’s Avatar (which also had a theatrical rerelease) in the 11th hour. And while it might be a bit of a fight to hold on to this record-breaking achievement, thanks to inflation not having been factored in just yet, it seems that the superhero movie isn’t giving up the top spot any time soon—which is especially important as Doomsday‘s theatrical release date looms.
It Should Come As No Surprise That Endgame Took Home the Big Prize
It wasn’t so far off from overtaking Avatar, having pulled in $2.79 billion globally before its theatrical re-release. With the new information included in the movie to prep audiences for its follow-up, it makes sense that it rose to the top. And while the reception to those newly added scenes isn’t entirely positive, with some fans claiming that certain additions, like Rhodey’s big reveal, ruin the more heartfelt moments in the franchise, that doesn’t seem to be enough to keep fans from purchasing tickets to make those new connections to Doomsday before it hits theaters in a few short months.
Doomsday hits theaters on December 18th, and theories and rumors keep swirling, drumming up excitement about what Marvel has planned next—especially the characters they hope to see in the next installment. And even the Russo brothers are chiming in at this point, stating that the entire cast of the film has yet to be revealed, a surprising fact considering that we’re only two and a half months out from the movie’s release. That fits with rumors of pretty intensive reshoots circling the production, suggesting characters are being added as we speak (including Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff—potentially shooting her scenes separately from the rest of the cast, either to maintain ultimate mystery, or to coincide with VisionQuest, the purported end of Wanda’s trilogy).
Do you have thoughts on Avengers: Doomsday overtaking Avatar as the highest-grossing movie of all time? Did you see it coming from a mile away? What about the reshoots? Let us know in the comments.
