Mutants training to hone their powers can be difficult and dangerous, according to thousands of X-Men comics, 9 movies, and four different TV shows have made abundantly clear. Now, imagine that without the help of Professor Xavier.

A new clip from FOX's upcoming X-Men-based TV series The Gifted shows the Strucker twins trying out their abilities on a vending machine when it all goes wrong. Check out the clip above!

In the series, twins Laura and Andy Strucker are polar opposites at their high school. Laura is well liked and in control of her powers enough to keep them a secret, while Andy is the opposite in both aspects. His powers nearly destroy their school at a dance when he is bullied, causing the family to go on the run before they can get captured by Sentinel Services.

The clip above briefly appears in some trailers for the show. It appears to be a scene where Laura attempts to teach Andy how to use his powers, but his emotions end up getting the best of him and hurts his sister and destroys a vending machine, forcing the family to go on the run yet again.

The Strucker's are joined by their parents Caitlin and Reed, the latter of whom works for the aforementioned Sentinel Services. After making a career capturing and incarcerating mutants, he is forced to put his family in hiding when his own children are revealed to be mutants.

The group end up coming into contact with another group of mutants who held facilitate an underground railroad of sorts, including Thunderbird, Blink, Polaris, and a new character called Eclipse.

Though The Gifted makes mention of the X-Men and the Brotherhood, the show is not connected to the movies or in the same cinematic universe. It's also separate from the FX show Legion. That might make some fans upset, but it will likely provide for a stronger narrative unencumbered by an elaborate and ever-changing continuity.

The Gifted premieres Monday, October 2 on FOX.
