An American adaptation of the BBC One series, The Driver follows a down-on-his-luck taxi driver, who through unfortunate circumstances, begins working for a notorious criminal. But the project isn’t exactly new territory for Morrissey. He starred as the cab driver in the original BBC One version, and even executive-produced the series. Morrissey will also executive-produce this iteration. Justified’s Taylor Elmore will write the Showtime treatment alongside Danny Brocklehurst, who wrote the original BBC scripts.
“The Driver contains subjects I love to explore โ ordinary people in extraordinary situations, father and son relationships, double lives, the lies we tell ourselves, the need to escape the mundane,” Brocklehurst explained to the BBC’s website. “But most of all, I’m proud of the fact that we have mixed together a character drama and a thriller and come out with a show that can break your heart, whilst also having some kick ass car chases.”
Many will remember Morrissey’s turn as Rick Grimes’ rival, The Governor, on The Walking Dead’s fourth season.
