In 2012, conceptual artist Larry T. Quach was working for visual effects company Rhythm and Hues. There, he was asked to work on pitch art for a new SpongeBob SquarePants movie that would later become The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. “The prompt I had was to make the SpongeBob characters into live-action superheroes,” Quach wrote on his blog. “Nothing really beyond that.”

With Marvel on his mind, Quach decided to illustrate the characters as members of The Avengers: SpongeBob SquarePants as Captain America, Patrick Star as The Hulk, Squidward Tentacles as Thor and Mr. Krabs as Iron Man. He also had Plankton resemble Loki, who was the main villain in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers.
His art wasn’t used in the film, but the scene in which they become superheroes did remain and is major part of the third act. Instead of The Avengers, SpongeBob becomes The Invincibubble, Patrick becomes Super-Awesomeness, Squidward becomes Sour Note, Mr. Krabs becomes Sir Pinch-a-Lot and Plankton becomes Plank-Ton.
SpongeBob: Sponge Out of Water is now playing at your local theater.
