Kingsman and X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn is reportedly in talks to direct a new movie based on the classic comic strip Flash Gordon.

Flash Gordon is the space adventurer created in 1934 by Alex Raymond. Gordon and his allies fight against the evil tyrant Ming the Merciless on the planet Mongo.

Raymond's strip has been a seminal influence on pop culture, particularly sci-fi, for decades. He has previously been adapted for three film serials, and a 1980 cult classic film that starred Sam Jones.

ComicBook.com spoke to Jones recently about the prospect of a second Flash Gordon movie, and if he'd be interested in appearing in it. It remains unclear if the new Flash Gordon film will be a sequel to the 1980 movie, or a complete reimagining.

Vaughn has become a rising star as an action and genre film director, thanks to his work on the X-Men franchise and adapting Mark Millar comic books, including Kick-Ass, for the screen. To acquire such a high profile talent would draw a lot of eyes to the fledgling film project.
