Lionsgate is developing a tentpole film adaptation of Gearbox Software's Borderlands video game franchise, according to Variety. The film is being produced by Avi Arad (The Amazing Spider-Man, Blade) and his son, Ari Arad.

The first Borderlands game arrive in 2009, mixing the mechanics of first-person shooters with the stat and loot-grinding of RPGs. Developed by Gearbox and published by Take-Two Interatice Software's 2K imprint, the game has sold more than 26 million worldwide.

The story of Borderlands takes planet of Pandora, once a hub of industry but now abandoned by the intergalactic megacorporation that strip-mined it. Players take control of vault-hunters, adventurers and treasure hunter working dangerous jobs on the fringe of society.

The Borderlands franchise so far consists of the original game and its sequel, Borderlands 2, as well as Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and Telltale Games' interactive adventure series Tales from the Borderlands.

No release timeframe or further details about the film were revealed at this time.
