SPOILERS for the Walking Dead comic book and potential spoilers for season 6 of the series ahead!

While The Walking Dead on AMC isn't a direct, beat-for-beat adaptation of The Walking Dead the comic book, most of the major moments of the comic have translated into the show in one way or another. Sometimes they've happened to different characters, or at slightly different times. A few of the bigger things from the comic haven't happened at all (Rick still has both hands) and some characters have died, or stayed alive, at various moments.

Nevertheless, with Rick and company now in Alexandria, that brings us to a major moment for one particular character, Carl. In the comics, when a zombie herd hits Alexandria, Carl gets shot directly through the eye, leaving him without that eye (and with one nasty scar) for the duration of the book since. EW.com asked showrunner Scott Gimple if that'd be happening, and he of course danced around it a bit.

"We don't know if anybody's losing their eye. This is not A Christmas Story," Gimple said. He said that the comic is a guideline, but they can't - and won't - do everything found on the printed page. "There are some things we can't do that were in the comic. There are other things we can and will do. There is a balance to be struck. If it is stuff that's really important to serve the character, we need to try and do it. It's also just if we can pull it off on a consistent basis in a great way. There's stuff we can do, there's stuff we can't do. I would never tell you what it is."

Naturally. Of course, Carl's not the only one in the crosshairs this season. With the villain Negan rumored to be in the process of casting, well, let's just say another fan favorite character from the comic needs to keep his head on his shoulders.
