Ron Howard's In the Heart of the Sea, which stars Chris Hemsworth (Thor, The Avengers), sank at the box office, finishing with $11M in its debut weekend. That paltry figure was good enough for second-place in an overall weak weekend. Many potential moviegoers are patiently sitting on the sidelines waiting for Star Wars: The Force Awakens to open this coming week.

Hemsworth still has to prove he is leading man material outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. 2013's Rush, which was also directed by Howard, opened poorly too, with $10M. However, it went on to gross $90M globally and only cost $38M to produce. Win! However, earlier this year Hemsworth experienced another opening bomb when Michael Mann's Blackhat opened with $3.9M. That film cost $70M to produce and only grossed $20M all together. Ouch! The Hollywood Reporter reports, "Those who I've spoken with say that the actor's payday per project moves from $8M-$12M to the $6M-$8M range after ITHOTS."

With WB's whale tale floundering, Lionsgate's The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 was able to hold on to first-place for a fourth straight week with $11.3 million. The fourth and final film in the series now has a domestic total of $244.5M.

Meanwhile, The Good Dinosaur stomped into third with $10.5M. Creed took fourth with $10.1M. Krampus scared-up $8M for a fifth-place showing. Spectre stole sixth with $4M. The Night Before nabbed seventh with $3.9M. The Peanuts Movie grossed $2.7M, good enough for eighth. Spotlight held on for ninth with $2.5M. Brooklyn clung to tenth with $2M.
