Revised Star Wars: The Force Awakens Opening Weekend Beats Jurassic World's Worldwide Box Office Record

It seemed over the weekend that while nearly every record would be trounced, Jurassic World would retain the worldwide opening weekend record over Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This was largely due to the former opening in China, the world's second largest film market, the same weekend as the U.S. and many other territories. The Force Awakens doesn't hit China until January 9, 2016.

Revised estimates revealed by Walt Disney Company CEO and chairman Bob Iger on Bloomberg TV Monday morning, however, will put the worldwide launch at around $528 million, about 3 million dollars higher than Jurassic World in June 2015. That comes from an expected uptick to the tune of $9-12 million in domestic ticket sales, putting it over the top.

The international opening (without domestic or U.S./Canada numbers), at around $280 million, will place third all-time behind Jurassic World and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. However, The Force Awakens did take opening day, single day, and even all-time single cinema day records (meaning it made more money in one day than multiple movies combined ever made in one day together) in many international markets, including the U.K., Sweden, Spain, France, and more.
