When will James Gordon sport his signature mustache on Gotham?

Well, it'll be a few years, according to series star Ben McKenzie, who addressed the frequent fan complaint at Wizard World New Orleans this weekend.

"I'm working on it," McKenzie joked, adding, "I forgot to ask that question when I signed on for the part. I never asked if I had a mustache or not; I just sort of assumed that being a younger guy, that was not going to happen....And then, I got cast and we were about to shoot and all of a sudden the Internet lit up with 'Is he going to have a mustache?' And I had a moment of panic where I was like 'That's really not a good look on a guy my age.'"

He said that he hoped to "build" to the mustache four, five or six seasons from now.

This isn't the first time the question has come up. During a panel at Wizard World in 2015, members of the Gotham cast joked that he had to "earn" the mustache.

Even before that -- shortly after the pilot aired -- McKenzie addressed the question, saying that showrunners weren't sold on the look.

"I had lengthy conversations with Bruno and Danny [Cannon] about everything else. Lengthy, lengthy conversations about all sorts of things. And then as soon as it hit the Internet that I was doing it, all anyone wanted to talk about was whether I'd have a mustache or not," McKenzie admits. "I thought about ringing Bruno and being like 'Uh, one last thing I forgot to…' we just literally never talked about it. And then I brought it up to him, and he goes 'No. That would look ridiculous on you.' It's twenty years before he can grow into the maturity and wisdom that it takes to sport a mustache, and that's the line we're sticking to."

In the meantime, you can always look back at McKenzie's Halloween photos...!

Gotham returns in February with new episodes at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
