During his panel at Wondercon, Aquaman director James Wan gave some hints about his entry into the DC Cinematic Universe, hinting at a feel that will draw from horror films, as they explore "the depths of our oceans."

"I think, like most people, we are familiar with Aquaman. We grew up reading or watching this character on the peripheral," Wan explained to Slashfilm. "I was never so in depth with Aquaman as, let's say, I was with X-Men. I grew up loving X-Men, Spider-Man and Batman. Those are obviously the key big ones, but there's always something kind of cool about Aquaman still, the idea of creating a huge world that is on our planet. That's the thing about Aquaman that's cool is he's not an alien, right? He's from our planet and he's from a society that we're not privy to in the context of the story. Isn't it crazy to think that we've explored space more than we have explored the depths of our ocean? That just fires up my imagination about potential sea monsters and cool creatures, that kind of stuff."

So, depths of the ocean, sea monsters, creatures, and rumors have flowed that the film will be based off of Geoff Johns' (also CCO of DC Entertainment and producer on the DC WB Movies) recent reinvigoration of Aquaman for DC Comics. Does that mean we're getting the Trench? Maybe something even larger? Either way, it shouldn't be too big of a surprise to hear that sea monsters are coming to the Aquaman movie. We're willing to bet there will be some swimming, too.

Aquaman is in pre-production now for a July 27, 2018 release. Jason Momoa cameos in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, out now, and will make his full debut as the character in Justice League.
