Contrary to earlier reports, Christopher McQuarrie will not be directing the sequel to 2014's Edge of Tomorrow. It will be the original film's director, Dough Liman, helming the Tom Cruise sci-fi action movie.

McQuarrie, who co-wrote the screenplay for the first Edge of Tomorrow, was said to be "attached to direct" in reports earlier today concerning the sequel signing on new writers. McQuarrie took to Twitter to clarify, saying that he will be involved with the film, but that "there's no Edge without Doug."

Liman's schedule is starting to look pretty full. He's signed on to direct Channing Tatum's Gambit movie for Twentieth Century Fox, but that project has delayed. He'll be directing The Wall for Amazon Studios in the meantime.

Edge of Tomorrow, based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka's light novel All You Need Is Kill, starred Cruise and Emily Blunt as futuristic soldiers trying to repel an invasion by aliens with the ability to reset the day.
