Jeffrey Dean Morgan was cast as Negan just days before he would be on set reciting 12 pages of dialogue for what would turn out to be one of the most iconic and pivotal scenes in The Walking Dead's history.

Morgan was brought to set, fitted in a costume, given a dozen page monologue, and walking out of an RV with 8 cameras in his face before he could say, "Pee pee pants city." Still, he brought it and captivated audiences for the entirety of his epic introductory scene.

"I was a little bit nervous, kind of, going in," Morgan says, adding, "but before I walked out I had this weird, kind of, calm."

"This role for me is something special," the actor says during a press conference in San Diego.

After the conference, ComicBook.com had the chance to speak with Morgan one and one to hear a bit more about his first few days with the role and how he prepared for it.

"It's a big scene," Morgan says. "You're not gonna be like, 'Oh, I have to feel that out.' I felt pretty okay all things considered. I just got thrown in. The first two days, everybody was like, 'Well, I hope that works out for ya,' and it really did. It's amazing. It's no bullshit that this cast is amazing. It's a family deal, they've got the support, but Negan talks a lot. There's something about getting Kirkman's words down and fiddling with it but it's great. It's f---ing cool."

Morgan says he is ready for the long haul and being a huge fan of The Walking Dead comics, he knows that means that could be a while.

The Walking Dead returns for its seventh season on October 23 at 9 PM ET on AMC.
