Charlie Hunnam has more than a few plates up in the air right now with King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, The Lost City of Z in post-production, possibly returning for the Sons of Anarchy spin-off series, but his confirmation with returning to the Pacific Rim franchise had been up in the air. Until now.

Yahoo! caught up with the actor during San Diego Comic-Con and that's where Hunnam confirmed that he had to exit Pacific Rim: Maelstrom very early in the production, but is quite thrilled the movie is happening regardless.

"I'm very excited about it! I'm glad they're making it," he said. "I think it's going to be great. I read an early draft of what they're doing. There was one incarnation of this sequel that involved me heavily, but I was unavailable."

Hunnam continued to praise the filmmakers on this project and hopes its as good as the first. "I think they're on to something special. They're really inspired to push this thing forward and to do something original with the sequels. It's cool."

Earlier in the year, John Boyega, who made himself a household name with starring in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, was announced to star in the Pacific Rim sequel as Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost's son.

Pacific Rim: Maelstrom is scheduled to hit theaters in 2018.
