Suicide Squad Director David Ayer is experiencing first hand what its like to helm a big budget superhero movie, and the ride has had its rough spots to be sure.

Case in point, at the film’s world premiere, the Director went out to introduce the film. Somone in the audience yelled out F*** Marvel!, and Ayer seconded the comment. That set off some of the more easily agitated Marvel faithful, but Ayer tweeted an apology afterwards.

“Sorry about getting caughtup up in the moment and saying f*ck Marvel. Someone said it. I echoed. Not cool. Respect for my brother filmmakers.”

Marvel and DC have always had a simmering rivalry, so I imagine no one at Marvel took the comment very personally. In fact, Chief Creative Officer at Marvel Entertainment Joe Quesada came to the defense of Ayers on Twitter, asking for annoyed fans to dial back the venom a bit.

“Hey Marvel faithful I know you’re upset but cut @DavidAyerMovies a break, it was all in good fun. Can’t wait to see SS, best of luck David!”

The film hasn’t been met with the adoration from Critics that Warner Bros. had hoped for, and most likely won’t be the outright homerun that they anticipated. That said, the film is still a really entertaining ride, and odds are that general audiences will be much more accepting of it once it hits theatres on August 5th.
