Much like Disney's successful Jungle Book franchise, which has two sequels in the works from two separate studios, there are also two different interpretations of Mulan in the works. One of those projects was offered to a well-known director, who later passed on the project.

That director was the talented Ang Lee (via THR), who is known for films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Brokeback Mountain, Life of Pi, and of course his 2003 take on Marvel's iconic goliath Hulk. The director decided to pass on the project, which is being produced by Disney as a live-action translation of its popular 1998 animated film. Disney's version is based on the rewritten script from Jurassic World's Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.

The other Mulan project is being produced by Sony, and like the Disney version is in search of an Asian director as well as a predominantly Asian cast. Sony's project is based on a script from Jason Keller (Mirror Mirror).

As for Ang Lee, his next project is Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, which features a talented cast made up of Kristen Stewart, Vin Diesel, Garrett Hedlund, Steve Martin, Makenzie Leigh, Chris Tucker, and Kimberly Battista. There's no word on why Lee passed on the project, but it could possibly be due to schedule. His next project, Thrilla in Manilla, is dated for sometime in 2018 and tells the story of one of the most iconic boxing matches in sports history between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.

Disney's Mulan project is slated for November 2, 2018.
