Unused Alien Creature And Spaceship Concept Art for Arrival

Earlier this month, Paramount Pictures' Arrival opened in theaters. So far, the thought-provoking science fiction film — directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner — has earned $93.2 at the worldwide box office, easily surpassing its $47 million production budget.

Professional conceptual artist Peter Konig (Warm Bodies, Splice), a member of the film's art department, has released artwork that he produced for Arrival, featuring alternate designs for the extraterrestrial spacecraft and the alien ("heptapods") creatures — nicknamed "Abbott and Costello" by physicist Ian Donnelly (Renner) — that try to communicate with Dr. Louise Banks (Adams).

"Examples of some preliminary design work for the film Arrival. I worked on it pretty early in the film's development and little of my work ended up being used, but here it is," Konig explained. "The first creature is the one director Villenueve favored at the time, but he did end up going a different direction. Them's the breaks. Also the ship took a different direction, obviously. At first, they wanted a nearly perfect sphere, but yeah...that changed as well. Some of the ship interior sketches seemed to make it through, though."

When mysterious spacecrafts touch down across the globe, an elite team - lead by expert linguist Louise Banks (Adams) - is brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers – and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.

The cast features Amy Adams (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) as Dr. Louise Banks, Jeremy Renner (Captain America: Civil War) as Ian Donnelly, Forest Whitaker (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as Colonel Weber, Michael Stuhlbarg (Men in Black 3) as Agent Halpern, Tzi Ma (Rush Hour) as General Shang, and Mark O'Brien ("Republic of Doyle") as Captain Marks.

The film is directed by Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, Prisoners) and based on Stories of Your Life and Others, a short story by Nebula and Hugo Award-winning author Ted Chiang.
