“This is to confirm that very sadly Peter Vaughan has passed away at approximately 10.30 [GMT] this morning,” Vaughan’s agent, Sall Long-Innes, confirmed in a statement. “He died peacefully with his family around him.”

In recent years, Vaughan was best known for his role as Maester Aemon of the Night’s Watch on HBO’s Game of Thrones.

His other television roles include playing Harry “Grouty” Grout on BBC sitcom Porridge, who was a fan favorite character even though he only appeared in three episodes of the show. He also had recurring roles on Citizen Smith and a major role as Tom Franklin on Chancer.

In film, Vaughan played Mr. Helpmann in Terry Gilliam’s Brazil, and also appeared in Straw Dogs and Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Remains of the Day.

Vaughan was born in Shropshire, UK. He began his acting career in theater, then joined the Army during World War II, serving in Normandy, Belgium, and the Far East.
