Back in 2009, James Cameron unleashed a new world into the realm of pop culture when Avatar hit theaters. The visually stunning blockbuster raked in billions of dollars, making it one of the most successful films of all-time. A slew of other Avatar films are still slated to release in the coming years, but Cameron and Disney are excited for fans to reenter the world of Pandora.
To do just that, the two have teamed up to bring Pandora to Disney World’s Animal Kingdom with Pandora - The World of Avatar. And, for the holidays, a first-look preview at the exhibition was gifted to eager fans.
The footage kicks off with a bold statement by Jim Rohde, the Senior VP Creative with Disney Parks’ Imagineers. “I was very skeptical that it was even physically possible to build the world of Pandora. This is a crazy thing to try to do.”
However, Rohde and Disney’s massive team of artists and engineers were able to do just that. Next year, the Avatar exhibition will debut fully, and Cameron cannot stress how excited he is for fans to see how state-of-the-art tech has helped bring his iconic franchise to life.
Earlier this month, fans were treated to another behind-the-scenes look at the Avatar installment. Recently, Taiwan welcomed a three-month showcase inspired by Avatar to its city. Avatar: Discover Pandora released a featurette that teased fans about Disney World’s upcoming attraction.
When Pandora - The World of Avatar opens to the public, it will feature a slew of impressive rides and attractions. There will be a Na’Vi River Journey ride which is said to be a “beautiful and lyrical” experience with a special surprise at the end. The park area will also be filled with hi-tech bioluminescent plant life and even feature a flight ride called “Flight of Passa.”
If you get hungry during your visit to Pandora, the park will also have several special eateries on-site. The main restaurant will be called Satu’li Canteen, and a special drink shop known as Pongu Pongu will also be open for refreshments as well.
In the 2009 original, Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully was a wounded former Marine confined to a wheelchair. His bravery and destiny help define a world he didn’t even know existed. As Jake’s relationship deepened with Zoe Saldana’s Neytiri, a fearless and beautiful Na’vi huntress, he learned to respect the Na’vi way and finally took his place among them.
