Best Film – Comedy or Musical

La La Land

This romantic musical comedy film follows two love birds, Mia, played by Emma Stone, and Sebastian,ย played by Ryan Gosling. One is an aspiring actress and the other is a jazz musician both are trying to make ends meet while pursuing their dreams. Of course, they are doing this while living in the city known for crushing dreams.ย

Best Picture – Drama

Manchester By The Sea

This drama staring Casey Afleck is about a man named Lee and his 16-year-old nephew. After Lee’sย brother dies, he is given guardianship of his nephew, Patrick. Lee returns to Manchester-by-the-Sea to care for Patrick, but this forces him to deal with issues from his past, including an ex-wife and many of the people in the town where he grew up. What’s more, both he and Patrick have to learn to live without Lee’s brother.ย

Best Actor – Comdey

Ryan Gosling – La La Land

Despite the fact that Gosling’s character is a crabby wanna-be jazz musician, he is quite charming in the film. Also, despite the fact that Gosling isn’t known for being a singer, he truly held his own during this film. What’s more, you’ve got to respect those dance skills.

Best Actor – Drama

Casey Affleck –ย Manchester By The Sea

Simply put, this story is about a broken man who returns to the town that he has been trying to avoid for most of his life – and Affleck put out his best performance of his entire career. If he doesn’t win for this one, it will be a complete shame.ย

Best Actress – Comedy

Emma Stone –ย La La Land

Hopefully,ย La La Land will walk away with the biggest awards in their genre of the night. Stone is a hilarious actress that pulls out all the stops in his musical comedy. Not only does she completely deliver on all of her comedic moment, but was still able to give a dramatic performance when the story called for it. What’s more she had to learn how to sing and dance for the part as much as Gosling did.

Best Actress – Drama

Amy Adams –ย Arrival

Whileย Arrival is a science-fiction based drama, which usually don’t get the recognition that they deserve from awards shows – with the exception of last year’sย The Martian wins – Adams’ performance in the film is absolutely worth the award. She put together one of the most emotional performances of the year. However, Adams is likely to lose to Natalie Portman’sย Jackie, but that doesn’t mean that the HFPA won’t surprise everyone and award Adam’s brilliant performance.ย
