Riverdale: Who Killed Jason Blossom? - Updated After 'A Touch of Evil'
Tonight's episode of Riverdale provided some great development for many of its core characters, [...]
Fred Andrews
As we stressed in last week's episode, we didn't really have a real reason for placing Fred on this list, other than that Luke Perry has said that he thought it'd be fun if Fred was the killer.
After 'A Touch of Evil', however, there are some (very small) suspicions to validate that claim.
When Fred confronted Archie about his and Jughead's fight, Archie vaguely explained that it had to do with doing the right thing involving a girl. Fred responded by saying that it's important to do the right thing, even if it costs you.
Could this somehow be Fred's justification for murdering Jason? At this point, anything is still a possibility.
prevnextSmithers
The friendly butler of the Lodge family's residence was missing from this week's episode, with Veronica focusing on drama at school while Hermione started a job waitressing at Pop's Diner.
But as we stated last week, the Lodge family is still under suspicion, between Hermione's suitcase full of money and her husband's past history of crime.
This places Smithers, who presumably would be willing to do anything for the Lodge family, as as likely of a suspect as he was last week.
prevnextPolly Cooper
As with last week, Polly has yet to make an appearance on Riverdale. But her presence has certainly been felt, especially with this most recent episode.
When Cheryl went over to the Cooper household, an innocent hangout with Betty turned into a full-blown interrogation. Cheryl asking Betty several pressing questions about the current state with sister, and how things ended between Polly and Jason. Betty grew increasingly defensive, eventually threatening Cheryl out of the house.
With Cheryl having her suspicions about the murder - enough for her to be the first arrest in the case for withholding information - her desire to assume Polly as a suspect could lead to some interesting repurcussions on the show.
And with Betty voicing interest in visiting her sister in her group home, there's a chance we could see Polly's first onscreen appearance on the show soon.
prevnextCheryl Blossom
We said last week that Cheryl's story about Jason's appearance just didn't quite match up, a fact that only rings more true this week.
With the reveal that Jason actually died a week after the 4th of July - something Cheryl knew and deliberately hid from the police - one of the biggest questions going forward is what exactly her involvement was in the whole ordeal. As Cheryl revealed to Veronica after running away from the pep rally - Jason was 'supposed to come back', meaning she very well could've had an unintentional hand in his demise.
Could Cheryl's quest to avenge her brother's death just be a cover up for her own complicity? We'll have to wait and see.
prevnextAlice Cooper
Last week, we referred to Betty Cooper's mom as 'the most unhinged person' in Riverdale - a title she could possibly still hold this week.
In tonight's episode, Alice got a front-row seat to Jason's autopsy, in order for her to write a story about it for the local paper. Everything seemed normal - until she handed the coroner an envelope full of cash.
Could Alice be involved in Jason's murder? That's entirely likely at this point. Given her rage towards the Blossom family - particularly Jason, for his entaglement with her eldest daughter - she is certainly suspicious. And this hatred of the Blossoms could extend even further to implicating Cheryl in the crime.
prevnextReggie Mantle
Our newest entry in the pool of suspects is Riverdale's resident alpha male, Reggie Mantle.
While his appearance in the pilot basically amounted to a glorified cameo, he was particularly inquisitive about Archie's cougar conquests over the summer.
And in tonight's episode, we got a look at Reggie's violent streak in his fight with Archie, which sparked from his nature to place the blame for Jason's murder on Jughead.
All of this adds up to a growing portrait of Reggie that could be seen in a negative light.
And with Ross Butler currently splitting his time between Riverdale and several other shows (including the upcoming Netflix series 13 Reasons Why), making his character the killer is an easy way to get rid of him if his schedule does not permit filming more episodes of the show.
prevnextGeraldine Grundy
Our final suspect for the week is Riverdale High's music teacher and Archie's romantic tryst, Ms. Grundy.
As Archie has confronted her, saying that he feels they need to tell the police about the gunshots they heard on July 4th, Grundy has gone to increasingly great lengths to cover that information up.
While this is easily passed off as her wanting to not get arrested for having an intimate relationship with her student, there is a chance that this secret could be the tip of the iceberg - and she could be hiding something much more sinister as well.
Especially with the reveal that Jason's death occurred after the 4th of July, Grundy's alibi is now gone, and she could easily have factored into Jason's actual killing.
After all, as Jughead pointed out to Archie, it seems that what Grundy cares most about is protecting her reputation - which would be hard to do if she was convicted for murder.
