It seemed at times that DC and Warner Bros. were both avoiding the Green Lantern property for as long as possible (at least when it comes to film). Lately, though more and more information has come to light in regards to the future of the ring slingers in the cinematic universe, and the latest news aims to confirm fans will be seeing one sooner than originally thought.

The Green Lantern Corps film doesn’t come out until 2020, but according to reporter Umberto Gonzalez, there will be a Green Lantern sighting in 2017’s Justice League (which is currently soaring high with a 4.36 out of 5 on ComicBook.com’s anticpation rankings). On a recent periscope video, he was asked about the Lanterns, where he said “Yes. There is a Green Lantern in Justice League. I forgot how to pronounce him. I forgot the name of the Green Lantern in Justice League, so we’ll see. Hey, maybe by that time they get to cast Hal Jordan and next we’ll throw him in there too who knows.”
A few fans threw out possible names, to which he responded “Kilowog. No, it’s not Kilowog. It’s a funny sounding, I’ll give you a hint it’s a funny sounding name. I’m like okay, better not cast Tyrese. It is confirmed that Green Lantern, a Green Lantern will be in Justice League. I don’t want to give you the spoiler obviously, but yes, there is a Green Lantern.”
Funny sounding names huh? Well, unfortunately, that describes half of the Green Lantern Corps, but the ones that immediately spring to mind are names like Salaak, B’dg, Tomar-Tu, R’amey Holl, Rot Lop Fan, and Soranik Natu, with the most obvious one being Abin Sur. Sur was the Lantern who passed his ring on to Hal Jordan before he died and having him cameo in Justice League would be an excellent way to set up the future DC icon in the cinematic universe.
The way Waner Bros. has handled their universe up to this point, however, suggests they’ll go the already established route. All of their heroes have been treated as already existing in the universe, with the only hero getting an origin to this point being Superman in the Man of Steel. Wonder Woman’s origin is coming after the fact in her solo feature, and no one knows what is happening over in The Batman-land. It would seem odd then to get a true Hal Jordan origin story if their previous pattern is adhered to.
In Justice League, fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.
Justice League is directed by Zack Snyder, from a screenplay by Chris Terrio, and features an ensemble cast that includes Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Ciarán Hinds, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Jeremy Irons and Jesse Eisenberg.
Justice League hits theaters on November 17, 2017.
