Mild spoilers ahead for tonight's episode of Riverdale, titled "Chapter Five: Heart of Darkness."
On tonight's episode of Riverdale, Archie is living in a PG world -- that's post-Grundy, of course -- and as a result, finds himself wanting for a musical mentor.
While an obvious answer -- working with Valerie from Josie and the Pussycats, with whom he has a rapport and has worked before -- is looking him in the face, Valerie has other ideas, and introduces Archie to her own songwriting teacher, who runs an exclusive practice but finds himself with an opening.
The teacher...isn't a big fan of Archie's songs, and quickly determines that "Justin Gingerlake" should find inspiration elsewhere.
During a recent visit to the set of Riverdale, ComicBook.com had the chance to speak with series star KJ Apa (Archie Andrews) about tonight's episode, and we asked him about that disappointment, which comes on the heels of praise from Veronica, Miss Grundy, and even Josie and the Pussycats in previous episodes.
"Valerie has some contacts for him, and he starts meeting up with them," Apa told ComicBook.com, preferring to keep it cryptic back before th episode had aired. "To hear things from other people that he might not be what he reckons he is, kind of hurts him a little bit, but sometimes everyone needs to be told the truth."
It seems like that might drive Archie back to his comfort zone -- to Valerie and the Pussycats, although now that her "favor" to Cheryl Blossom has been done, Josie seemingly wants nothing more to do with Archie Andrews.
"Valerie is helping Archie with his music and helping him with his songwriting," Apa said. "And as soon as the Pussycats find out that she's helping him and playing with him, they're having none of it. They already don't really like Archie because of a lot of reasons. They don't think he's that good, for a start. Josie is very protective of her Pussycats and Valerie doing that does not make him happy at all."
That, of course, immediately begs the question: will Archie pursue a relationship with Valerie, as he had in the comics for a while?
"Their relationship, although it was founded on music, it doesn't remain all about the music," Apa teased.
