The Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to grow even further with the release of 2019’s live-action Captain Marvel movie. While news on the film has been relatively scarce so far, it appears that the film is one step closer to hitting screens, with today’s announcement that the film will be helmed by the directing duo of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.
This news excited many in the pop culture world, but not everyone. Some have been wondering, especially given the mixed response to some of Marvel’s past female representation, why the studio’s first major female-led film is only being co-directed by a woman instead of solely directed by one.

When a Twitter user questioned if the company has a gender problem behind the scenes as well, the received a response from none other than Captain Marvel herself, Brie Larson. In a short tweet, the actress defended one of Marvel’s senior executives, Victoria Alonso.

As Marvel’s current Executive Vice President of Physical Production, Alonso has had a significant hand in essentially every big-screen Marvel project since the first Iron Man, making her a name definitely worth knowing and recognizing.
Regardless of what you think about the recent Captain Marvel news – and what it means for female representation in Marvel Studios as a whole – you have to appreciate Larson for embodying her inner Carol Danvers and standing up for her fellow badass women at Marvel.
Meg LeFauvre (Inside Out) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel’s Gamora comic book) are working on the script for Captain Marvel. The film follows Air Force pilot Carol Danvers, whose DNA because infused with that of an alien being (a member of the Kree in the Marvel Comics universe) during an accident. The infusion gives Danvers superpowers including super strength, flight, and energy projection.
Captain Marvel currently has a 3.78 out of 5 ComicBook.com User Anticipation Rating, making it the thirteenth most anticipated upcoming comic book movie among ComicBook.com readers. Carol Danvers was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gene Colan for Marvel Comics. Danvers made her first appearance in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 in 1968. She made her first appearance as the superhero Ms. Marvel in Ms. Marvel #1 in 1977. Danvers took over the mantle of Captain Marvel in 2012.
Captian Marvel is scheduled to open in theaters on March 8, 2019.
