Sorry about that. But, all wrestling puns aside, this new Netflix series does look awesome.
Alison Brie stars in GLOW, which stands for Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling, and it tells the tale of women in professional wrestling in the 1980s. Brie’s character is named Ruth Wilder, who can be described as “a struggling and out-of-work actress who eventually goes on to create the first women’s wrestling TV show.”
For those vaguely recognizing the title, GLOW – which stands for Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling – was in fact a real television series, which ran from 1986 to 1990. The syndicated series became a sort of cult hit amongst fans, and helped pave the way for the mainstream female wrestling audiences see today.

The fictionalized version of the series – which is co-created by Nurse Jackie alums Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch – will follow Brie’s character throughout 1985, as she “finds one last chance for stardom when she’s thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women’s wrestling.” Her co-stars will include Elementary‘s Betty Gilpin as a rival wrestler, and comedian Marc Maron as GLOW‘s trainer.
