Anime fans know that a lot of meaning can rest behind a character’s name. Or, when it comes to Dragon Ball, a lot of puns. Since the series debuted back in the 1980s, Akira Toriyama made sure to give his characters gag names related to anything and everything. Bulma’s family is all named after undergarments while Freeza and his race are all tied into rather chilly names.

Still, there are some characters whose names are funny for the sake of being such. For instance, the franchise’s World Martial Arts Champion has the title of Mr. Hercules Satan. The foreboding name clashes terribly with the fighter’s over-the-top personality. But, if you think about it, the name isn’t all that bad

At the very least, Mr. Satan is better than the guys real name.

In previous interviews, Toriyama has spoken at length about his naming conventions and how he came up with certain ideas. In a previous Q&A for the fifth volume of Dragon Ball‘s full-color line, the creator was questioned about Satan and if he had a real name. Naturally, the mustached man does have a birth name, and it is not what you might expect.

“I gave him a ring name that was reminiscent of a pro grappler. His real name is “Mark”1. Since the region where Satan lives doesn’t split up names into given names and family names, his name is simply ‘Mark.’”

So, there you have it. One of Earth’s mightiest fighters outside of Goku and his squad carries the name Mark. How a guy like him decided to name his daughter Videl is beyond us.

Dragon Ball Super recently kicked off the ‘Universal Survival’ saga. You can check out the brief synopsis for it below:

“At Goku’s request, the Omni-Kings’ “Tournament of Power” martial arts tournament between universes now begins! โ€ฆBut this also proves to be the beginning of universal destruction. What awaits the victors of this tournament, and the vanquishedโ€ฆ?! How will these intense team battles between the elites of each universe turn outโ€ฆ?!”
