If you’ve ever questioned if Attack on Titan has gone too far, you are not the first one to do so. Since the series’ manga was first published, outsiders have looked upon Attack on Titan with a heavy dose of trepidation. Attack on Titan uses shock and horror in a variety of ways, but none can compare with its anime‘s depiction of death. The series is known for brutally cutting down characters at the slightest whim, and fans have often watched a beloved character get eaten alive whilst trying to cover their eyes. Here at ComicBook, we are going back and recounting just some of the most unforgivable deaths seen in Attack on Titan so far.
Mikasa’s Kidnappers
Nothing can prepare a child for their parent’s brutal murder or even their own abduction; However, Mikasa was forced to deal with such an event when human traffickers slaughtered her family to sell her at the market. In shock from her parents’ deaths, Mikasa could only watch as Eren came to her rescue and violently murdered two of her captors before she would come to her sense. When Mikasa did come back to Earth, all she could do was scream and run a blade through one of them men’s hearts – and fans didn’t know if they should cheer at the act or cry.
Marco Bott
Attack on Titan gave fans a small mercy by not showing Marco Bott’s death on-screen, but it did not spare them the aftermath. Stumbling upon the cheery soldier’s brutalized corpse has fed nightmares for years now. The manga does not give fans a reprieve when it comes to Marco’s death, but the anime made sure to pull on heartstrings by making Jean come across his best friend’s mangled body. The soldier’s right side has been gnawed off, and his corpse is left with a hauntingly vacant expression which will make you flinch.
Levi’s Special Operations Squad
Captain Levi may not be the most open of men, but his original Special Operations Squad was a good family to the chic character. Petra, Gunther, Eld, and Oluo argued like siblings, but they were ultimately some of the strongest soldiers in the military. So, when it came time for Captain Levi’s squad to outrun the Female Titan, fans were shocked to see how casually the family was destroyed. Gunther died first before Eld was eaten in mid-air. Petra was all but vaporized when she was thrown into a tree, and Oluo was the last one to go when a Titan kicked him into oblivion.
Mike Zacharius
As the only death from season two to make the list, Mike Zacharius’ death is one of the most disconcerting passings to-date. The death took place in the season’s premiere episode, and fans watched as the gave his comrades an escape from Titans as Wall Rose was inundated with monsters. However, the boy did not get far. Mike’s horse was killed by a massive creature known as the Beast Titan who interrogate Mike about his weaponry. The monster then stole the soldier’s weapons and ordered surrounding Titans to eat Mike alive, leaving fans to hear his wailing screams as the episode faded out.
Carla Yeager
No death on Attack on Titan can ever outdo the shock value of Carla Yeager’s death. In the anime’s first episode, fans were torn between admiring animation and flinching violently when Attack on Titan brought monsters in Wall Maria. Earlier in the episode, Eren Yeager fought with his mother over his desire to join the military, but his sour feelings fade when their home comes under attack. When he arrives home, Eren finds his mother crushed under rubble as a grinning Titan approaches them. Eren is forced to leave after a tearful farewell, and the boy can only watch as his mother is literally manhandled out of his home’s wreckage. When the Titan then chomps down and bites Carla in two, fans can actually see the moment Eren nearly loses his will to live.
