If you were one of the many who tuned into the second season of Attack on Titan, then you likely left the episode feeling a bit queasy. The anime‘s comeback left fans pleased given how long the show has been on hiatus, and Attack on Titan was not shy about bringing back its stereotypical gore. Still, the season’s premiere episode did feature one death which made even the most iron-stomached fans cringe.
Manga fans knew the death was coming, but plenty did not expect Mike Zacharias to exit the anime so brutally. The squad member was a key fighter in season one as his sense of smell made him a valuable Titan tracker. However, when season two premiered, Mike chose to let his comrades escape danger when a slew of abnormal Titans began chasing them within Wall Rose. The leader was able to cull several Titans before a new, menacing creature made his introduction.
Known as the Beast Titan, a furry creature approached Mike who instinctively feared the behemoth. The Titan then began to speak, and the beast became annoyed when Mike could not answer back out of fear. Stealing the soldier’s maneuvering gear, Mike is left defenseless and surrounded by Titans who are apparently under the beast’s control. The foreboding creature then told the Titans to do as they pleased with Mike, and the anime made the soldier’s traumatizing death much worse than it was in the manga.
Mike attempted to defend himself before the Titans surrounded him, but the soldier could do nothing without his gear. Several Titans quickly surrounded the man, pulling him apart slowly with their teeth whilst Mike screaming all along. In the manga, the death only occupied a panel or two – and fans were not able to hear his death cries. The anime took its time with Mike’s death, showing a montage of bloody screams as the character pleaded for anyone to save them. But, after one Titan got a hold of Mike, the rest of his mindless comrades were able to tear Mike apart limb from limb as he cries.
And the Beast Titan? Well, he finds the whole thing amusing and informative. The creature takes away nothing from the merciless death other than the fact that Mike can apparently speak the same language as he can.
